Cast Iron Muffin Tin (or "Tray" if You're from the UK)

Everyone is familiar with those heavy cast iron pots and pans, but did you know that cast iron can also be used to make bakeware like muffin tins, pie pans and mini cake and tartlet pans! And, as consumers across the US, Canada and the UK are growing increasingly wary of the safety and durability of PTFE-coated non-stick bakeware, other types of bakeware – such as cast iron muffin tins (or muffin trays, if you're from the UK) – are gaining popularity.

Where to Buy a Cast Iron Muffin Pan

Now, to be clear, cast iron bakeware is by no means a new thing. In fact, if you're really lucky, you might find a vintage cast iron muffin pan in one of the antique stores in your area. Chances are, however, that finding a cast iron muffin pan – whether used or brand-new – will turn out to be more difficult than you might have imagined – that is, if you stick to regular stores. Buying a cast iron muffin tin or tray online, on the other hand, is relatively easy, and with just a few clicks and a valid credit card, you can now effortlessly buy Lodge's cast iron muffin pan on Amazon.com. Or, if you live in Canada and like to use Amazon's local site, you can buy it through Amazon.ca here. And the best thing is, Lodge's cast iron muffin tin, which is pictured on the right, is made in the USA!

Are you looking to buy a sturdy cast iron muffin tray in the UK instead? No worries – you can also get a cast iron muffin tray on Amazon.co.uk.

Why You Should Get One

Cast iron has been around for a long time, and cast iron cookware is considered very safe in terms of toxicity. Cast iron does not contain unnatural chemicals like BPA (bisphenol-A), which is found many plastic products, or PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), which is found ins traditional PTFE-coated (Teflon-coated) pans and pots. The only thing it can leach into your food is trace amounts of iron – but that can actually be a good thing! Today, many American and British women are deficient in iron, a trace mineral that is needed for the formation of hemoglobin which transports oxygen from the lungs to your body's cells.

Potential health benefits aside, cast iron cookware is also sturdy and durable, and if you take good care of your cast iron muffin pan, it will likely serve you and your children (and perhaps even their children) for years to come.

On the downside, cast iron muffin tins and trays are relatively heavy. If that's an issue for you but you still want a product that's naturally free of unnatural substances like PTFE and PFOA, you might want to consider getting a set of glass muffin cups instead. Another disadvantage of using a cast iron muffin pan is that you have to keep it seasoned, plus you may have to grease the cups before pouring in the batter in order to avoid sticking. But for many avid bakers looking for a muffin pan without a Teflon coating, the extra care that is required to keep this pan in top notch condition is simply worth it.
