Below, you find two must-try drink recipes featuring ingredients that are overflowing with vein health boosting flavonoids and antioxidants. But before you get started with the recipes below, you may want to check out the section Diet for Treating Enlarged Veins and section Varicose Veins: Foods to Eat which explore the role of diet in the fight against varicose veins from a more general perspective.
Hot Chocolate with Almond Milk
Dark, unsweetened cocoa powder is an excellent dietary source of flavonoids such as catechins and procyanidins. A diet rich in flavonoids has been shown to be particularly beneficial for people with varicose veins. However, the flavonoids lose much of their power if cocoa is consumed together with dairy. In order to maximize the health benefits of cocoa, this hot chocolate is made with almond milk instead of cow's milk.
5 tbsp brown sugar|
3 tbsp dark, unsweetened cocoa powder
2 cups unsweetened almond milk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
|Combine sugar and cocoa in a small saucepan. Whisk in almond milk.|
|Warm over medium heat, stirring constantly, until hot. Do not boil.|
|Remove from heat and add vanilla. Serve hot.|
Raspberry Blueberry Smoothie
This delicious smoothie is packed with nutrients that help maintain the health of the collagen matrix by neutralizing enzymes that destroy connective tissue and by scavenging free radicals. These nutrients also repair damaged proteins in the blood vessel walls and promote the overall health of the vascular system.
1 cup fresh raspberries|
1 cup wild blueberries
3/4 cup rice milk
3/4 cup crushed ice
1 Tbsp flaxseed, freshly ground
|Combine all ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until smooth.|
|Garnish as desired. Serve immediately.|
