Blueberry Smoothie Featuring Milk Thistle Powder

Up your daily intake of antioxidants with this luscious smoothie starring blueberries and milk thistle powder, both of which are celebrated for their high antioxidant content. The banana in this recipe imparts a creamy texture, while the apples add sweetness as well as antioxidant phytochemicals.

To help you get the most antioxidant bang for your buck, this recipe calls for Red Delicious apples. A study that compared the antioxidant capacity of eight apple varieties found that Red Delicious apples, along with Norhern Spy apples, had the strongest antioxidant properties among the tested apple varieties. What's more, the skin contained substantially higher levels of antioxidants than the flesh, so don't bother peeling the apples before blending them with the rest of the ingredients. Just make sure you use organically-grown apples to reduce your exposure to harmful pesticides!

Blueberry Spinach Chia Smoothie


  • About 1 ⅔ cups filtered water
  • 1 small banana
  • 2 organic Red Delicious apples
  • ⅔ cup frozen blueberries
  • ⅔ tsp milk thistle powder (buy it here)


  • Peel, rinse and core the ingredients as needed, and put them in a large-capacity blender in the order listed above.
  • Purée until smooth and creamy, adding more water to achieve the desired consistency. Enjoy!
